Smoothie Recipes Without Banana: Fruit, Yogurt & Oat Ideas

Practical guide Updated Oct 2026
Fresh berries, peaches and kiwi at a fruit market without bananas

Not every smoothie needs banana. If you dislike the flavour, simply don't have one, or want a different texture, there are plenty of ways to make a small smoothie using berries, ripe pear, mango, yogurt or softened oats instead. The recipes below are from Purple Wave's recipe library and their listed ingredient tables do not call for banana.

How can you make a creamy smoothie without banana?

Banana normally adds sweetness and thickness. If you remove it from an existing recipe, the drink may become thinner or less sweet. Instead of replacing it gram for gram, start with a recipe designed without banana. Plain yogurt can add body and a tangy taste; ripe soft pear or mango adds fruit flavour, while a small amount of soaked oats can make a breakfast blend feel more substantial. The best choice depends on your preferred flavour and any ingredient restrictions.

Six banana-free smoothie recipes to try

1. Blueberry Power Smoothie

Our Blueberry Power Smoothie combines blueberries with milk and a measured protein powder. This is a useful option when you want berry flavour without banana. Its original ingredient list includes ice, so omit that unless your specific blender's manual explicitly permits ice cubes. Chilled milk and berries are simpler alternatives.

2. Raspberry Lemon Yogurt Smoothie

The Raspberry Lemon Yogurt Smoothie uses fresh raspberries, yogurt and a little lemon zest for a brighter, tangier flavour. Yogurt adds creaminess without using banana, although raspberry seeds can remain noticeable in smaller blenders.

3. Pear and Cardamom Smoothie

Our Pear and Cardamom Smoothie uses a very ripe, peeled pear with milk, yogurt and a small pinch of cardamom. Choose soft pear rather than a crunchy, hard fruit. For a firm pear, cooked and fully cooled unsweetened purée is a gentler option for a compact blender.

4. Mango Lassi Smoothie

The Mango Lassi Smoothie brings together mango and yogurt. Ripe mango offers sweetness and body without needing banana. Keep the portion suitable for the blender bottle and check the recipe's ingredients before adapting.

5. Peach Vanilla Yogurt Smoothie

The Peach Vanilla Yogurt Smoothie relies on soft peach and vanilla yogurt. It is a mild, creamy option if you prefer a delicate flavour over a strong berry smoothie.

6. Apple Cinnamon Oat Smoothie

Our Apple Cinnamon Oat Smoothie is made with apple purée, quick oats and cinnamon instead of banana. Soften the oats in milk first. Avoid hard raw apple chunks in a small portable blender and use smooth apple purée or cooked, cooled apple as the recipe explains.

What if you also want to avoid yogurt?

Banana-free and yogurt-free are two different requests. Several of the recipes above use yogurt or milk. If you would rather avoid yogurt, see our smoothies without yogurt guide. If you must avoid dairy completely, check every ingredient and substitute label rather than assuming a banana-free recipe is dairy-free.

Is avocado a banana substitute?

Ripe avocado can add a soft, rich texture, but it is less sweet than banana. It does not work as an identical flavour or nutritional replacement. Small amounts in a suitably liquid-rich smoothie can be helpful, though not every person can use avocado because of preferences or allergies. You can see how avocado is used in our chocolate avocado recipe, which itself includes banana and therefore is not one of the banana-free choices above.

How to blend a small banana-free smoothie

  1. Start with a suitable cold liquid and keep enough space for ingredients to move.
  2. Prepare ripe soft fruit in small pieces; remove stones, pits and hard seeds.
  3. Use yogurt or soaked oats in modest quantities if you want additional body.
  4. Follow the manual's fill limit and ingredient restrictions, particularly for ice and frozen fruit.
  5. Stop and safely adjust a mixture that does not circulate. Never force a stalled motor.
